Overtown is a neighborhood in Miami, Florida. Located northwest of Downtown Miami, Overtown was known as Colored Town during the Jim Crow era. It is a diverse community that is known for its multiculturalism and historic charm. During the early decades of the 20th century, Overtown was largely gentrified and has remained that way. Overtown was a vibrant, historically Black community in 1964, but today it is a community of tens of thousands of white people. In the wake of the construction of Interstate 95, it was forced to relocate over 15,000 residents. Hundreds of businesses closed and a mass influx of poverty took place. The neighborhood continues to be a vibrant cultural hub, with a vibrant black business community. Despite the challenges, Overtown continues to have plenty to offer its residents.
After the war, the neighborhood’s residents had to deal with the demise of the neighborhood’s many buildings. The new buildings and residents were not in the right place for residents, but the new businesses are improving the community and making it safer and more inviting. The area’s cultural diversity was also a boon for Overtown’s residents. Now, they are thriving in their careers.
